About

Architecture and Industrial Design taught me to think through structure, function and purpose. Art opened a different territory.

For me, art is a space without predefined programs. It is guided by emotion, intuition and the discoveries that emerge along the journey.

In sculpture and painting, the work gives form to an inner landscape. Material becomes a way of revealing memory, perception and emotion. In photography, that inner world recedes, allowing the outside world to unfold in its own presence, light and silence.

Although each medium follows its own language, they all belong to the same search: exploring the invisible through form, matter and perception.

  • 100 Artists of Today — Page 26. «The face evokes a certain primitive dread, and at the same time, anguish, pain, the uncertainty of tomorrow. It crumbles, decomposes, slips away. In terracotta or bronze, the face molded by Estela Currao gives life to our interior voids, highlights our abysses, our bitter gulfs.»

  • The Power of Expression — Jacques Desage, Miroir de l'art n° 10, 2007. Pretending indifference, being impassive, controlling our emotions, we end up showing a plain face without asperity, in which it shows, at least apparently, some adversities such as age. And I pull the skin behind my ears for fear some wrinkles might come to reveal my fragile appearance. Anger, fear or sorrow seem to be the only emotions able to deform our features. In our well organized society, what is inside us does not matter to anyone, the door is shut, like the mouth. Then we learn that someone is recovering from a terrible depression, or that somebody else has lost a beloved one six months ago… I just didn't realise, nobody told me about it… We try all our life to protect ourselves, and there are probably many advantages to shield behind the mask, with no expression. This difficulty to communicate is the setback, we become dumb, we reject each other. And thanks to this pathology, psychiatrists are always busy. To talk, to shout, to be heard, or rather make others hear what we have inside, is not civilized. The highly expressive faces created by Estela Currao defy this convenience which wants nothing to be revealed. We can see all the unsupported emotions coming out from individuals overwhelmed by their own anguish, the faces are deformed by obscure powers… This work of art could be the South American artist's reaction to western society, Parisian in fact, which manages to ignore human poverty or isolation. A sign that we are withdrawing on ourselves. This kind of sculpture tries to move us and intend to awake feelings, emotions, which can bring a smile on us or a grimace. To react, to express oneself, not to remain indifferent, Estela Currao not only denounces the eternal alienation of the human condition, the suffering, the fear, the persistence of painful memories, but also underlines, by opposition, the lack of fraternity. Society becomes feminine, and we can see more men crying at the cinemas, as well as in real life. But where are the faces deformed by rage, the faces revolted by injustice? Are they in the factories, at the demonstrations? This culture shows us by contrast, people with no make-up, naked faces that cannot deceive. The artist's hands reveal a share of humanity that makes so many mistakes around us. The sculpture that focuses on the face, it takes us away from what we can see here or there. This is what sincerity is, a true work of art, detached of commercial considerations, an original and authentic expression. We have an artist here to be followed…

  • VISAGES — March 2007. Let it be said: portraiture is far from being an outdated genre. Today, the human face remains a field of endless exploration for artists. Estela Currao, a young artist born in Buenos Aires in 1970, works with clay with a distinctly South American energy, giving her sculptures a deeply striking expressiveness. Her work seems to vibrate with life, animated by the countless reflections that move across its surface and by an indefinable force that the artist has managed to capture and breathe into her faces.
